Lucy Cherry Crisp papers, 1794-1972.

Scope and content Correspondence and other materials concern Lucy Cherry Crisp's association with the North Carolina State Art Gallery, Greenville Art Center, Florence Museum, Rocky Mount Arts Center, North Carolina Art Society, Greenville U.S.O. Club, Greensboro Writer's Club, and the Presbyterian Church. Subject files and clippings concern the 30 North Carolina Painters art exhibit in New York City. Also includes art-related correspondence, chiefly from North Carolina artists. Letters from George Washington Carver reflect his friendship with Crisp and concern his lectures, research and philanthropic work at Tuskegee, and endorsement of Crisp's intention to write a biography of him. Also includes copies other Carver correspondence, which Crisp used to write Carver's biography. Topics of family and personal correspondence include the Civil War, rural life in Falkland, and the Vietnam War. Diaries and daybooks chronicle Crisp's personal life and career-related activities. Financial papers concern the State Art Society, the Florence Museum, Crisp's personal affairs, and family business dealings. Collection also contains materials and correspondence related to her writings and publications, such as the manuscript for Brief Testament; drafts of George Washington Carver's biography; copies of the diary of Delha Mabrey of Edgecombe County, N.C., which Crisp edited; a biography of Greenville capitalist Marvin Key Blount; poetry; The story of Nancy North; Spring fever; Brief testament; and the History of the North Carolina State Art Society.

Biographical noteLucy Cherry Crisp, a native of Edgecombe County, N.C., studied music at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina and later attended Columbia University, Boston University, and Radcliffe College. During her career she taught music, worked for religious organizations, and directed art galleries and museums in Greenville and Raleigh, N.C., and Florence, S.C. She wrote numerous articles, including newspaper columns for the Raleigh News and Observer and Greenville Daily Reflector. She prepared for publication a biography of George Washington Carver and the Civil War diary of Delha Mabrey.
